Interesting. That doesn't surprise me as much as it should, probably because when I was a kid the "two-earthlike-planets-colliding" theory for the origin of the asteroid belt was still considered credible. But in retrospect, you'd think there would have to have been some sort of disturbance for planetary collisions in a mature system.

Like, you know, Galactus stopped by or something.

Since they hadn't swept their orbits clear, wouldn't they be dwarf planets?

You're still bitter. Aren't you.

They probably tried to colonize or mine one of their moons not knowing it was an artificial satellite that controlled the planetary trajectory of their solar system, and knocked its systems out of whack...

No, but I do play one on TV. There's a talk coming up at Griffith Observatory by one of the people that really pushed for the definition. I think the subtitle was, "and why Pluto had it coming."

Pluto's right; the astronomy association is wrong.  Here endeth the matter.  You can say 'dwarf planet' (as I notice the BBC still tends to do), but it's a damned planet.

Anyway, I'm sure the Jedi felt the smackeroo in question.  I was pretty interested to see that those two Earth-like planets were in orbit around a binary system.  That's a big deal -- there are a lot of close binary systems out there.  SF people love them, but maybe so do a lot of people who live near them.

Oh noes!  In six months, the oceans will be covered with a thin film of plastic!

Or probably not, but we'll see.
