you'd be surprised how much a nutsack can stretch. you have to stretch it yourself, not a woman. they don't do it quite right.

well, i'll start from latest to oldest.

i made this last week. i bought a bag of mammoth ivory scraps. this is from a slice of tusk's outer layer that flaked off. probably about 4-6" radius. made it into a tooth shape and carve maori symbols into it.

Are the symbols ideographic or decorational?

Are the symbols ideographic or decorational?

this is one of the reasons i wanted to post here. i love my art and i research it. most people don't appreciate that.

the symbols are both, in a way. the spirals are called "koru" in the maori language.

koru is symbolic of an opening fern frond. it's a symbol of new life/new beginning.

the "waves" coming out from it signify growth of that new beginning.

thanks, another reason is to make me stretch as an artist. YOU PEOPLE are one of the hardest audiences i've ever encountered. i appreciate that on a level that makes me a better person.

That is a really nifty piece. I love Maori art, and got to watch a native artisan working (jade) in NZ when I was there two(!) years ago.

when i went to hawaii, i gave my friend gecko this piece. it doesn't show the lanyard/toggle (i always lash them by hand and make custom toggles for each one.), but it was one of my favorite pieces at the time. he gave me a custom/one off mug in exchange.

this is his work: http://www.southseaarts.com/artist.html

this is the hei matua i gave him.

that's a few years old. i've learned much more about jade. it's a fickle stone.

here's the hook after i attached the lanyard and toggle. i couldn't think of a great way to attach it so i just kind of wrapped it around.

here are a few more pieces:

this is rosewood with a bone barb.

this is BC jade in a glass fishing float style.

this is modeled after ancient maori fishing lures. the wood is cocobola and the barb is mammoth ivory. the shell is paua, a new zealand abalone. i bought about 4 or 5 shells a few years ago and they last quit awhile if you use them right. i still have a lot of ideas for jewelry with paua.

i wasn't sure if i was going to post any "work in progress" shots, but i decided to post this one.

it's going to be too small for me, i'm about a 10 1/2. if there's anyone here interested in it with smaller hands than me, let me know.

it's made of mammoth ivory.

should be done in a couple of days.

it's amazing how strong bone is, even when it gets somewhat thin.

Yeah, those hooks look a lot like salmon hooks made by native types all along the West Coast, from Alaska on down.  Must be a good design.  Very cool.

the hooks are purely objects of art.

i don't think i've yet acquired the skill to lash them properly. the materials are the same, the method is similar and the heart is into it.

the originals had a fiber called, seniti (sennit). it was made from coconut fibers. it was kind of like the "cable" of the day. very strong. i use a nylon substitute, artificial sinew. it's probably as strong, but, like i said, i don't have the knowledge. i think that comes from actually having to feed people. the lures were often made from whale bone and turtle shell. they so treasured (and durable) they were used through generations.

there are many similarities among the the people of the pacific islands and coasts, both east and west.

an interesting point also is the similarity of imagery amongst the maori and irish/celts.

You can buy spools of real sinew from Crazy Crow for reasonable $.  I know folks who make lots of Native craft stuff, and that's where most of them get it, if they don't make it themselves.  Er, from animals, I mean.  We have a friend who used to often show up at our place with roadkill so she could use our tools to dismember the things.   Eventually, my brother and SIL bought her tools of her own for Xmas.  My brother was :nervous: that his branch loppers had so much blood on them.

I'm not 100% sure what they catch with them, but some of those Pacific Northwest hooks are bigger than your forearm.  You gotta be brave to go out on the freezing Pacific in a canoe to catch something big enough to need a hook like that.
