the hooks are purely objects of art.
i don't think i've yet acquired the skill to lash them properly. the materials are the same, the method is similar and the heart is into it.
the originals had a fiber called, seniti (sennit). it was made from coconut fibers. it was kind of like the "cable" of the day. very strong. i use a nylon substitute, artificial sinew. it's probably as strong, but, like i said, i don't have the knowledge. i think that comes from actually having to feed people. the lures were often made from whale bone and turtle shell. they so treasured (and durable) they were used through generations.
there are many similarities among the the people of the pacific islands and coasts, both east and west.
an interesting point also is the similarity of imagery amongst the maori and irish/celts.
