What's the frame built out of?

Wellll, a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

Who would've thunk that we had 90% of what we needed to build an Elephant hanging around the house. My friend brought over some left over drywall and newspapers - the only thing that we have had to buy that is pictured was the masking tape.

We are following this tutorial: http://ultimatepapermache.com/paper-mache-tutorial/elephant-sculpture-video

but instead of MDF we used drywall. And for the tail, ears, tusks and trunk we used a combination of hardware cloth and coat hangers.

We are going to do the paper mache clay that she has a recipe for - and for that we had to buy the joint compound, glue and linseed oil. You will note that our elephant is an adult, not a baby, and there are a couple of blocks in the middle of his back.

The blocks on his back are the anchor point for a platform. On the platform I will be building a howda made out of Sugar Plate. He will also be extensively decorated with jewelry and hanging cloth also made out of sugar.

You already know the precautions about working with linseed oil, right?  I mean, I'm sure you do.  But I mention it just in case.

Actually, not so much. Tips are appreciated!

Linseed heats up a lot when it dries.  People who use it as a varnish run into problems with this -- including spontaneous combustion (apparently especially with floors) -- surprisingly often.

There's regular, and there's boiled, but I can never remember the details.  And I don't know if your concoction will heat up significantly.  And drywall is obviously far less flammable than MDF.  But even so, you might want to wiki linseed oil to see what's what, or whatever.

Oh wow. I would have guessed the frame was like coat hangers or some kind of wire or cardboard tubes. I never would have thought of doing it like the video showed, but it makes sense.

Neat!

you can get brass and copper cloth with a much, much finer weave than hardware cloth. i bought mine at michaels. it's used for armatures. it's pretty cheap. i use it to make pickling pouches for my silver work. steel tools ruin pickle solution (and the steel gets copper plated).
you'd be surprised how much a nutsack can stretch. you have to stretch it yourself, not a woman. they don't do it quite right.

No steel tongs!!!

Seriously, steel in the pickle has been a bane more than once in class.

you put the steel in the pickle and you drink it all up
