No, not fun. That's over-thinking and makes me want to get my 'plosives out  :P

I understand the sound difference that y'all are getting at now, but I don't see it as a different vowel sound, only a different emphasis due to the letters following the vowel. I'm going to enjoy my ignorance on that one.

For me, 'pasta' and 'mat' have the exactly same vowel - just one is longer in duration than the other. They rhyme - but even on a broad transcription (writing out in International Phonetic Alphabet coarsely rather than exactly) they aren't the same.

I'm supposed to have a southern accent. I have every reason to have a southern accent yet I don't. Except for "y'all". I can put on a southern accent like an old bathrobe though, mostly do it at work. It puts people at ease here. Plus it makes me talk slower so the old folks can understand me.

This test was definitely better than the last. I got, no surprise I guess, "Western."

Western is kind of neutral, but not quite since it's still possible to tell where you're from. So you might not actually be from the West (but you probably are). If you really want to sound "neutral," learn how to say "stock" and "stalk" differently.

I just took this again for giggles, and got Southern.

Wow. The only time I have ever been told I had a Southern accent was when I was living in Charlottesville, and was on my research trip to the Canadian arctic. Those boys were all Canadian, so I figured their evaluation of my accent was slightly (or heavily) skewed. I did say "y'all" a lot more back then....

I think it might be because I said I say "I" like "Ah" when I'm not thinking about it. Hmm...

People up here (In New Joisey) wonder where my southern accent is.  I've been accused of speaking a different language when talking with my brother and the accent comes back real strong.

You`re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you`re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don`t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up.

I got neutral,,,not a surprise,,,I grew up in the south but both parents were NYC born and raised,,,They skewed my southern accent!  In the south I sound northern, in the north I sound southern.  In France I just sound like a rude American.  :angry:
