PSA, partial vacuum is a total fail for casting.

time for plan B. looks like the london show might not be in my future.

Dunno, that just sounds like a leak. Check your seals, re-grease your O-rings? And you did change the oil, correct?

yes, to all those things. i'll take it apart and recheck all of it and try again in the next few days. i'm taking today off from it as i'm a little more than fried and frustrated with it.

at least it's pretty easy to disassemble and reassemble. the oil stuff is the biggest pain.

well, after a 3rd cleaning and reassembly it's still only pulling about half of what it did before. i think it may be the hosing. it's not officially rated for vacuums. i'll try getting vacuum hose and if that doesn't work i'm going to harbour freight with my 20% off coupon and buying a new one for $140.

$140 for the hose or $140 for the whole thing?

Seems excessively expensive to me either way, but I've never bought a pump like that.

the whole pump. they range from that on the low end to well into the 4-500 range for the size i need. depends on where you buy them. the set up i have goes for $850. i got it for 150, so if i have to drop another 140 i'll feel okay. my moai earrings are already getting requests, so i may enough to pay for it.

well, i forgot to take into consideration the negative space that existed before it started for oil. i put more oil in and it started to get up to normal pull. then it froze up again.

i have way too much to do and am hating this thing more every day. time to let it go and bite the bullet for a new one. it will be worth it in the release of stress.

i appreciate the help and the chuckles from watson.

Can you maybe sell your current pump as a fixer-upper and recoup some of the money?  Some pump geek out there could probably get it working again with a gasket or some WD-40 or ball bearings or something.

well, i let it cool down and it worked even better. it started to smoke a little on the exhaust port. i think the oil is wrong for it. it started to really rattle when it got up to pressure.

when it stopped last time it was the motor getting hot, not the pump freezing up. i wish i knew what i was doing.

guess there's nowhere to go but up by trying everything.

no, i'll turn the motor into this.

there's a video that shows how to do it with a few rare earth magnets and tupperware. all you need are the pins and a good motor. i can get it done with scrap wood at work and parts off of ebay. probably less than $30. well, i think it might be $45 with the pins. they're pretty specific for the job. gotta buy them from jewelry supply place.

what's weird is that once it gets up to almost a full vacuum the innards (the vanes) start rattling around like it's going off balance.

It's possible the impeller's unbalanced now, somehow.  Otherwise, it sounds, yeah, like either you've got the wrong oil or too much oil.

But yah I know crap about this device.

And I forgot you'd already said you were going to make it into a polisher.  That seems like a good project all by itself.
