Ok, the second try at rebuilding the db didn't go so well.

The backup is huge and I'm having problems getting it to the new host in a form that will work for the import.

The real problem is that I don't have enough time to deal with this right this moment, so I set up this board in the mean time.

SMF is the board software that I wanted to migrate BC to anyway, so it seemed like a good choice. At least this way we'll all have a place to yap while I figure out wtf is up with the db backups. I'm pretty sure I have all the data and that it's just a matter of getting it to the new host, so don't panic about something being lost. I should have it, it just might be hard to get to it for a little while.

Anyway, SMF seems much better than phpbb at first glance, but I want to hear feedback from you guys. Do you like it, not like it, wish it had a certain feature? Let me know.

Right now the board is as vanilla as they come. It's all public and it's just one category right now. I'll try to stop in during the day and make some of the obvious changes as I can carve out time, but bear with me (ladies, feel free to bare with me!). Hopefully we'll have everything back to normal as soon as possible.

What format is the backup in now?  What format do they want it in?

I think a mysqldump file will load into things like phpMyAdmin...  well, except for php not accepting an upload that large :)

It's all in mysql dump format (text sql inserts). The problem isn't the format, it's the fact that it's too large to upload without phpMyAdmin timing out. I've asked the guys at the new host to import it, but it seems to be incomplete when they do.

I think I can break it into smaller chunks, but that will take some time. I have the big tables broken down into single query files, but they're still a meg or so and the timeout still happens. They are complex queries though and could probably be broken down into smaller pieces. I won't know for sure until I have more time to spend on it.

Anyway, the data is still there. I have a lot of backups and I can still make them if I need to (the db is still up on the old server). It should just be a matter of when I'll be able to get the data back into the board.

php's default upload size is 8 MB, I think, so maybe something like "split -l 500" would get it into 8 MB chunks?

(Hm.  My copy of phpMyAdmin defaults to 2 MB.  Yeah, remind me not to import my 20 GB database that way.)

It doesn't take that long to break a database into smaller chunks.  The biggest problem I've had with it is naming the files.  Of course, I'm an idiot.

Well, the breaking it down into chunks itself doesn't take much time (they're splittable anywhere between queries), but some of the 1Mb files are a single query.

Breaking that down into smaller chunks is what will take some time.

It's not phpMyAdmin's limit I'm hitting, it's the php script timeout limit on the server.

...uh, DM, why don't you just number the files (eg: filename01.sql, filename02.sql, etc)?
