I need to make acquaintances with a movie freak... then crash on their couch for a week while I screen what needs to be seen.

Well. Rent "Escape from New York" for starters ... also "Big Trouble in Little China"

Good movies to watch while your brain chemistry is altered

But not as freaky as the remake of  The Thing...

If anything, it's worth it to watch Wilford Brimley have a major freakout with an axe and a gun...

I still owe Carpenter a punch in the nuts for that. Couldn't sleep for . . . long time after seeing that.

Yeah, but I bet you liked the flamethrower scenes. Any movie with a flamethrower automatically gets at least one star in my book, no matter how crappy the rest of the movie.

Kurt Russell has got a great fashion sense too. It wasn't enough that he had the cool sunglasses and sombrero, but he had to add that special touch and fold the edges of the brim of the sombrero.

I just re-watched this movie for teh millionth time about a week ago.
It's symbolic of our struggle against reality.

I think he was going for the Jim Morrison look in that one...

I love John Carpenter movies, though. Even the bad ones...

The guy's head dripping off the end of the exam table, and turning into a spider??? jeezus.

And yeah, love Carpenter movies. Still dig Prince of Darkness, even though no one could ever figure out what it was about.

The problem I had w/Prince of Darkness was that I don't believe in Satan, so I'm kind of bored with that whole religious angle. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing that one again.

Maybe tonight. Really creepy special effects.

Of course, the best:

Prince of Darkness does make very little sense.  Even less sense if you assume that is supposed to be Satan, because . . . WTF is Satan up to, and how strange are his methods?  But it has the best Alice Cooper role since Monster Dog.

They Live! is awesome, despite the wrestling, but The Thing will always be my favorite.  That and Dawn of the Dead were the first two actually scary horror movies I saw, when I was young and impressionable.  They did kind of ruin a lot of later horror movies for me, but it was worth it.

despite the wrestling,

WAIT just one minute here. That was the best one-on-one non-fu fistfight in the movies, evar.

And I did finally watch POD again and realized I was totally wrong about it.
Satan as extraterrestrial trapped in some dark universe in the mirror= awesome

It's funny seeing Carpenter compulsively use other operandi from his other movies, like Alice Cooper swooping down with a pair of scissors like Michael in "Halloween," monsters spewing stuff onto the unsuspecting as in "The Thing,"  warning messages transmitted like bad TV video in "They Live" and other more minor things, like the habit of using paint-peeling rooms for settings and government-sponsored electronic equipment as props...

Oh and +1 for a pre-Simon & Simon Jameson Phillips. Yes, still w/mustache.

Except for Ghosts of Mars, which consists of almost nothing but elements of his earlier films.  Except slightly on Mars.

I watched Ghosts of Mars the other night through On Demand. It was pretty bad. Natasha Henstridge made it tolerable.
It's symbolic of our struggle against reality.

Oh, that's Natasha Henstridge?

I didn't recognize her with clothes on. :nonplused:
