Warning, it's a Lady Gaga cover, but it's pretty good.
I need this done ASAP, or whenever you can get around to it.  Tomorrow is fine.

I love how some of the kids in the audience look amazed but some of them are just bored to death.   Maybe they've seen this five or six times before in rehearsal, or something.

They way he drops down for the low intervals is what impressed me most, since is voice probably isn't done changing.  Well, that and his piano-playing isn't bad, either.

The girls in the back are not the audience, they are sitting on the stage and probably the "chorus" or something. I am guessing you are right with the rehearsal thing.

He has substantially more talent than most of the people on TV and the radio right now. Hope he gets a deal based on this video.

I used to see this all the time, although he's still better than most of the folks I used to see perform, too.  For instance, ADB was in a professional men's a capella group for awhile, one of those groups that just reformed every summer in a touristy area and did a variety of 50s Classics ("In the Still of the Night" and "Sh-Boom", etc), A Capella Classics ("Moondance", etc), and Hey, Now It's A Capella! (Beatles, Seal, Wham).  They were good, but the group was like twelve guys, and in any given incarnation at least ten of them were better than 90% of major professional recording artists.

Of course, a lot of the really professional pros -- the studio artists, backup singers, session musicians, etc -- are way better than the stars.  They just want a job where they get to pick up a paycheck and go home most nights and have a fairly normal life.  But still.  On the rare occasions that I've seen American Idol, I've always thought . . . you people kind of suck.   No offense to them.

It always killed me that 90% of the people in those semi-pro groups I used to see weren't interested in music as a career.  It was just a hobby.  Man, if I could sing like that, you'd never shut me up.  Although god knows people try.

Go into pretty much any church in America and you'll find someone with substantially more talent than anybody on the radio and tv right now.

The main ingredient they're looking for in The Business is malleability. You have to be made into something that fits the system. Look at any video of Lady Gaga from even two or three years ago--huge difference in approach (although she is a little more able to somewhat dictate her own terms in the presentation, esp. by now since she's considered a Proven Commodity). It's all about a look, an image, what is your Story.

Talent has even less to do with the process than it ever has though, unfortunately. We can fix it in the mix. Autotune, Melodyne, you can single out any note and correct it. If it was all just on talent, half this board would be famous, heh. Anyway, hopefully this kid keeps going and stays with music; getting a million reblogs and Youtube views and etc. has to be encouraging in that respect though, surely.

(I gave up on American Idol some time ago, when Simon passed on one girl mainly because of her looks; she was a larger sized woman...somebody pointed out that she wasn't sized much differently than Aretha Franklin, and Simon replied that Aretha Franklin wouldn't have made it on the show either. At that point I said, well I have no use for this program then.)

Wow. I think I would have to kick him in the nuts if I ever happened to run into him. Aretha Franklin? Are you fucking serious?

I've always despised that show, and this just seals the deal.
It's symbolic of our struggle against reality.

  To hell with Simon.  Obviously.

There's a lot that's about how manageable you seem to be, too, which has to do with how quickly you'll sign whatever, how easily bought off your parents seem to be, how crazy you are to do whatever in order to be famous, etc.  They don't want to market you at $20 million a year for you to flame out after a year.  Boy bands are genius partly because if one dude flames out or escapes, big deal.  Menudo yourself a replacement.  Performers who will wear what you tell them to wear, sing what you tell them to sing, tour when you tell them to tour, and say the right things at press conferences . . . those are bankable, from a corporate point of view.

The contentious ones tend to do one or two studio-guided albums with a bunch of hits and then go their own way to do 'their' music . . . with less financial success.  Sinead and Alanis leap to mind, although they both had some 'artistic' indie success after doing their own thing, and, yeah, Alanis had an early dance-music career of sorts.  Corporations love one-hit wonders, though.  You don't have to keep dealing with them, their one hit will (until recently) sell a whole album, and you don't have to resign them at favorable terms if you don't think they can do it again without the studio's help.  One hit = fifty million bucks for the company + we throw you away and pick another one.
