Go into pretty much any church in America and you'll find someone with substantially more talent than anybody on the radio and tv right now.
The main ingredient they're looking for in The Business is malleability. You have to be made into something that fits the system. Look at any video of Lady Gaga from even two or three years ago--huge difference in approach (although she is a little more able to somewhat dictate her own terms in the presentation, esp. by now since she's considered a Proven Commodity). It's all about a look, an image, what is your Story.
Talent has even less to do with the process than it ever has though, unfortunately. We can fix it in the mix. Autotune, Melodyne, you can single out any note and correct it. If it was all just on talent, half this board would be famous, heh. Anyway, hopefully this kid keeps going and stays with music; getting a million reblogs and Youtube views and etc. has to be encouraging in that respect though, surely.
(I gave up on American Idol some time ago, when Simon passed on one girl mainly because of her looks; she was a larger sized woman...somebody pointed out that she wasn't sized much differently than Aretha Franklin, and Simon replied that Aretha Franklin wouldn't have made it on the show either. At that point I said, well I have no use for this program then.)
