I wonder if they spit on the cars going by beneath them.

I have never read the book, but I've heard what it's about. Assuming that was accurate, this is an amazingly designed book cover (and book cover design seems to desperately need it recently):

The importance of not racing the red light (http://www.oddman.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/35121111.gif).

Cars approaching from the top are trying to beat the light.  The traffic from the right starts to go when the light changes.  Alert pedestrian is alert.

One of the worst offenders, yes.  We remove stickers all the time, and the evil ones are desperately, orphan-molestingly evil.  Wal-Mart's are among the very worst.

Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: random axe on July 10, 2012, 02:45:50 PM
Yeah, we use it regularly, but there are some stickers it simply does not work on.  We're generally as sparing with it as possible -- you can often still smell it on a book months later, although it doesn't smell bad -- but we've experimentally ruined a few cheapass books to see just how obnoxious the stickers are.

Wet the sticker with Goo Gone, put book in plastic bag, give it 24 hours.  In some cases, still the best you can do is make a mess of it.

We also use old credit cards as scrapers.  Easy does it, though.

Stickers on stuff sold at Meijer and Target are really variable, but for some reason, I notice, pet food bowls often have indestructible stickers.  Some of my cat's bowls are stainless steel and have been through the dishwasher dozens of times but still have their stickers on the bottom.  Meanwhile, I capped the old vent pipe on my kitchen roof with a dog food bowl four years ago.  The sticker on the bottom has thus been in full sun, snow, rain, etc, all that time, and it's still intact.  Somewhat faded.

I used to have good luck with Undu, but not anymore.  I don't know if they changed the formula or reduced the concentration or what.  When that stuff first came out, it was cool and scary.  They did a promotional demo where they attached toilet paper to a strip of duck tape, then sprayed it with Undu and held it up.  After maybe thirty seconds, the toilet paper fell off the duck tape, still in one piece.  But last time I tried some, it didn't take the sticker off cleanly, and it soaked into the book instantly.

Goof Off will take the color right out of a typical paperback's cover, or a hardcover's fabric.  Too strong.  But it'll remove Sharpie from a lot of surfaces, for what it's worth.

I'm not sure which breed that is, but those small barrel-chested dogs are ridiculously strong.  I remember a world record was set by a Boston Terrier, in the 80s, for pulling a sledge, in terms of the sledge's weight proportionally exceeding the animal's weight.

The bull-and-terrier breeds are like that.  Take a heavily muscled animal with long legs, shorten the legs, and you've got some real mechanical advantage.

edit:  I think that's a Jack Russell.

The new Hubble image (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/archive/releases/2012/37/image/a/) they released blows my mind. The image itself is not so spectacular after years of being bombarded with Hollywood-made space images, but after reading the description of the image, and seeing the size of the area shown in the image in relation to the moon, I had to reboot my brain. I can't comprehend looking 13.2 billion years into the past, or that there are 5,500 galaxies in the picture.

it goes into storage. they may reuse it.

i just googled and found an image of the summer installation that's now in storage:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/citoyen_du_monde_inc/7968070072/

they'll probably reuse those next summer.

we're redoing it in december for winter, i'm not sure what it will be. we're doing monarch butterflies in the spring. those will be tough. still have to engineer a frame to hold the fabric in the shape of a butterfly wing.

Well.  This seems obvious, but . . . butterflys have a frame that works.  If you simplify that a bit to use more straight lines, it should still work, huh?  If that's not simple enough, use thin spring steel for the outline frame and wires stretched across to give it the right shape?
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: pdrake on October 03, 2012, 10:13:43 PM
the fabric is the problem. how do you get the fabric to stay on only using a few points. the leaves were easy because of the points of the scallops.

when you get above 10' you have to move into the 1/2" steel tubing area. otherwise it will collapse on itself.

i would probably have to draw a picture to show you what i mean and i'm not doing that tonight. too damn lazy.

WOW

How do you make those giant leaves?
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: random axe on October 03, 2012, 10:33:55 PM
Hot glue?  Rivets?  Stretch the fabric entirely over the frame so that you have two layers of fabric with a seam along the frame?  Use two identical thin frames sandwiched together with the fabric edges trapped in between?

Or use a non-stretchy material with the right pattern on it?  Like, uh, acetate with the pattern printed on it?  Probably people don't use acetate anymore.  Does it really have to be translucent, or can it just be lit from below?  If the latter, use printed mylar?  It would weigh nothing . . . .

Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: pdrake on October 03, 2012, 11:08:24 PM
the frames for the smaller leaves are 3/8" pencil steel. the larger frames are 1/2" steel tubes. the fabric is 4 way stretch spandex that's dye sublimated printed. the fabric gets small pockets sewn into it where the points of the leaf extend to. after they're stretched onto the frame they use a hot knife to cut off the excess.

i can't use acetate or other acrylic materials because of material sizes. it really has to be translucent because that's the whole reason of it going in an atrium.

if i were able to build a frame that could take multiple panels acrylic that would've worked great. we even priced out having them printed on acrylic and vacuum formed. i did small tests at home on forming acrylic. budget drives a lot of these things. that and the ability to rig stuff into their ceiling. there are multiple fire system lasers crossing the space that we have to hang around.

it's a pretty complex job that a lot of people in the shop think we should never have taken on. now we have to do 4 installations a year. it takes 5 or 6 days to hang everything. it was a month long process designing everything.

I suggested we use the fruit chart; you know the one, "This week, your baby is the size of a _______" fill in whatever fruit. We were going to take a photo of her holding each fruit and at the end a pic of her holding the Mote, but we got poppyseed through sweet potato and crapped out. Like I said, we could go back and fill in the remainder, but it's not the same afterwards. Plus I have no idea where to find a jack fruit.

The other night, I went to the local ill-constructed strip mall emporium, and because I needed to go to stores on opposite sides of the big central parking lot, I parked in the middle.  There weren't many other people out in the cold that night, and the lot was nearly empty.  My car was alone in the middle of the lot.

When I came out of the grocery store, ready to go home, the Mall Security truck was parked directly in front of my car.  WHY?  WHY RIGHT THERE?

This is just one example of this type of thing, but I believe there is definitely some psychological reason behind it. Or maybe it's just easier for some people to park in relation to another vehicle, instead of in relation to the painted stripes. Another example of this is self-seating in restaurants. Pick a remote spot to sit, and watch the next group of people come in and sit right next to you.

Actually, a few years ago I saw a study that was done by one of the European car companies -- I think it was Volvo.  It was about instinctual crash avoidance, and they found that about half of people have an instinctual fatalistic urge.  If they're driving a car on a test track, and the guy in the passenger seat can intentionally send the car out of control as it's approaching a 'target' like a cutout of a bridge abutment or a parked car, they'll steer toward the target instead of away from it.

There were a couple of suggested reasons why this might be so, and personally I think it's the narrative explanation.  People think, oh shit, I'm going to hit that, and they unconsciously help make that happen.  But the why of it is probably less important than the fact of it.

It never fails that when I go to the grocery store, and purposefully park several empty spaces away from other cars (so that I can get a little more walking in), someone parks right next to me.

It's especially stupid when they do it at night, when the parking lot and the store are mostly empty. I have yet to be confronted by any creepy people, but Arlington is pretty much mostly creepy people, so maybe my creep radar has adapted.

There've been a lot of those 'vintage' what-if movie posters, and I'd say 90% of them are awesome.  It lets you put any cast and crew together, provided they were working at the same time.  It's a great game, and the posters are routinely terrific, themselves.

Great stuff.  I approve.

Collection (http://imgur.com/a/Ep395) of Movie promo shots and behind the scene shots.

As I was looking through these, it dawned on me that I've seen almost every one.

I counted 5 that I haven't seen:

GUYS AND DOLLS (Saw part of it, didn't like it)
IT (Never heard of it)
HOOK (Saw part of it, didn't like it)
THE ROCKETEER (Saw part of it, didn't like it)
HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS (I've never watched any of the Harry Potter movies)

This is my favorite shot. (http://i.imgur.com/TQM5IRG.jpg)

Haha, I love the Conan the Barbarian one.

"IT" was the made-for-TV bastardization of Stephen King's novel of the same name.  It was of no consequence, other than as an opportunity to see Tim Curry play an evil clown who eats children, which was, admittedly, pretty good, but that's the film's only redeeming characteristic.
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: random axe on May 20, 2013, 09:56:13 AM
I love Tim Curry, but I was tired of Pennywise after about 30 seconds.  It (It) was a fairly serious attempt to film the book, but it's just not going to work, and it didn't.  That photo is more awesome than the film.   Poor Tim Curry.

I really like The Rocketeer, which I still think is one of the very best comic book adaptation films.  Even though it's much less adult than the comic.  It's got the same Golden Age pulp hero quality of Raiders of the Lost Ark but with 10% more Disney (in not a bad way) and 20% more sly kitsch.  About two-thirds of The Phantom managed to catch the same vibe, but then several parts were pretty bad.

The pic for Psycho reminds me that Tony Perkins was considered a hot non-threatening young'n, back in the day.  Almost the Johnny Depp, in an early not-so-weird-yet Depp way.  He was (secretly) gay and terrified of women, which may have helped him in Psycho.

The American Werewolf pic is cool.

As much as it wants, I think.

There are a bunch of husky and malamute breeds that occasionally turn out giants.  The giants rarely look purebred at all, which makes me suspect hybrid vigor plus genetic outliers, but, yeah, they're big.

Lenses can definitely help exaggerate a dog's size, of course.  Even a huge dog can appear bigger.

A friend of mine flew to Japan back in the mid-90s on some East Asian airline, and she took a photo of the flight attendants to show how short their skirts were.  They were in the Wide Belt category of skirts, but I think they were wearing . . . hotpants? bloomers? some kind of shorts underneath.

It did look pretty exploitive / exciting, though.  She also told me she could see First Class, and that the flight attendants gave First Class passengers massages.  :trance:

:rollin:  OMG, that's so hilariously bad and clueless.

I love the Founders in that pic, though.  Lincoln looks like he's doing his impression of Al Jolson singing "Mammy", and the guy on his left looks like he's saying "Jesus, huh?  What a surprise!  Let's give him a big hand."

Also wikipediaed Five Thousand Year Leap, which I only vaguely remembered having heard of.  It's also hilariously naive and sad.  Pretty much any time someone invokes "Natural Law" I can guess that they are utterly unaware of nature and really only mean What Seems To Make Sense To Me And Thus Must Therefore Be Universal.  Which is great if you're not over the age of 15.

So I'm looking at this picture of Earth from Saturn (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/multimedia/pia17171.html#.Ug5hrWR4YzU), and I'm thinking, wait a minute, Earth wouldn't be illuminated, but then I realized how one-dimensional I was thinking

Out of curiosity, I looked up the Solar System Orbit Diagram (http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/?ss_outer) which is difficult to see on the site, but they offer a postscript download, which, when edited to remove background clutter, shows this:

This is the July first locations, and the Saturn pic was taken July 19th. Looking at this, it seems like the Sun would have been behind Earth and Earth would not have been illuminated. The orbit difference of 19 days couldn't make that much change, could it?

What am I missing here? Is the diagram just deceptive in its simplicity and scale? Another NASA fake?  :P
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: random axe on August 19, 2013, 10:11:45 AM
The Earth . . . is always illuminated by the sun.  From Saturn's point of view, there are three bad times to take a photo of Earth -- when the Earth is directly in front of the sun, directly behind it, or when Jupiter is in the way.  Oblique lighting works fine in a case like this.

If that solar system chart you have is right, it does seem like the sun ought to be in the photo, somewhere near the Earth.  But of course that chart is not to scale.  In the NASA photo, the sun is off to the left, behind Saturn.  Cassini probably waited until it was in Saturn's shadow to take the picture specifically to keep the Abrams lens flare under control.

/best guess

The sun is in the middle, axe. You old Ptolemeyan, you. :harumph:

PD this looks like from Saturn we'd see a crescent Earth, with enough magnification. The differences in orbital plane between Saturn and Earth might mean you'd get a bit more sun on the earth from the angle (hmm, not sure about that) but I think Cassini only saw a dot anyway.
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images

Quote
...this looks like from Saturn we'd see a crescent Earth, with enough magnification...

Yeah, like the Moon, is what I was thinking.

I know these images require a lot of manipulation, and I think they just failed to mention they were lightened up, or whatever.

Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: random axe on August 19, 2013, 01:34:25 PM
Middle is just a conceptual framework, and, gravitationally, strictly speaking the sun isn't in the middle -- the middle is in the sun.  :P  Or at least it's in the sun right now.  My hazy recollection is that a few years ago it was somewhere nearby.

Anyway, if you look at Saturn's limb, you can see that the sun is behind it -- OK, OK, you can see that Saturn is eclipsing the sun, from Cassini's point of view.  Sunlight is refracting around the edge of Saturn's outer atmosphere.  I'm pretty sure that's what's going on there.

The Earth ought to appear gibbous or crescent, and I'm not sure I even could figure out which if I tried, but given the range and resolution, it just tends to blur into a near circle.  So, yeah, that's a magnification issue.

Pretty sure.  I have no idea how Saturn's orbital plane differs from ours, and I'm too lazy to try looking it up.
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: vox8 on August 19, 2013, 01:59:53 PM
Would it be more accurate to say that the Sun is in the center? Middle, to me, implies a linear construct with a beginning, middle and end. The sun is at the center of the solar system, which implies either a circular or spherical construct.

Language, precise and accurate.

centroid is a better word, though. null just sounds boring.
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: random axe on August 20, 2013, 09:54:43 AM
But the sun isn't in the middle, or center, of the solar system.  The center of mass is more complicated.  A few years ago, it was outside of the sun, although it's currently inside the sun, but not at the center of the sun.  The sun's much closer to being in the middle, but strictly speaking the planets don't orbit the sun so much as everything orbits everything else, to some degree.

That's what I was elliptically (har har) going on about.

Every time I look at it, it strikes me that you could do this with some mechanical setup where it's immediately obvious that the dots can't be moving in a circle.  Use levers with colored (or light-up) ends, hinged near the back and connected to three eccentric wheels.  The levels can clearly only move back and forth, but, yeah, the dots would still appear to move in circles.

I bet it would even be trippier.  But, no, I'm not going to build it.

Here's the thing:  If the chair's pintle fails because it's spinning like that -- which can happen, as they're not built for high-speed rotation -- the column that the seat rests on is going to drill its way right through the seat.  If you survive it, it's going to be extraordinarily miserable, not to mention embarrassing at the ER.

It's slightly 'cheating', because that's what they call a power strip -- it's a series of plywood sections on springs, with a tumbling mat on top.  It's not as springy as a springboard or trampoline, but it's springier than, say, a wooden floor.

Back in the . . . late 80s, maybe . . . they started putting a spring floor under the big floor mats used in serious competition because the floor mats tend to absorb so much energy.  Which they're supposed to, because otherwise you'd break your bones all the time, but it makes soaring through the air harder.  And then they started building power strips for practicing on, with sometimes hilarious results.

The gym I used to go to during the summer, years and years ago, had one power strip that was especially springy, and some people could do ridiculous things with it.  But it ended in a foam pit, so there was no sticking the landing like that.

Also the one on the left originally looks like Walken, yeah?
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images
Post by: mo on October 25, 2013, 09:17:45 AM
Yep, I thought it was Walken at first glance.

I did a GIS on this because it looked familiar, but I couldn't remember how it was done. The image is from 1999, and was big on the internet in 2005. Here's the explanation of how it works / how it's done, and a gallery of similar images (that don't work very well for me, but these type of things never do work well for me).

Quote
The illusion works by manipulating the spatial frequencies of the image.  The low spatial frequencies (the rough, fuzzy shape information of an image) from one image (e.g. Mr. Angy) are combined with the high spatial frequencies (the sharp edge information of an image) from a different image (e.g. Mrs. Calm).  When viewing this hybrid image at a close distance, our perceptual system is able to extract and process the high spatial frequencies and thus we see the image where the high spatial frequencies were taken from.  When viewing the hybrid image at a distance further away, our perceptual system can no longer extract the high spatial frequencies meaning we only see the low spatial frequency information, thus we see the other image.  You can also get a switch in the hybrid image by squinting.

Anyway, changed it to a link.
Title: Re: Other Worthy Images

It would be easier to do smaller, with a single device and, say, propane.  You couldn't sell a device made for it that was intended for use with solid or liquid fuel.  But smaller, you could do it with one fan, underneath, and angled vents near the base of the fire, maybe in a Pyrex cylinder.

Tabletop firenado.  It'd beat those LED candles that have real wax.

Ha ha!  Looks great.  Terrible idea, though.

Trust me, on average, it's fifteen minutes before it wobbles or gets spun slightly too fast and flings burning fuel outward in all directions.  I tried spinning a citronella bucket-candle from a rope it was hanging from, years ago, and quickly realized why that was a terrible idea.

Spinning the flame is probably safe.  Spinning the fuel is not.  Although actually there are cool things you can do with flames and electric fields, since the flames are plasma.  I'm not sure that's been adequately explored in the novelty market.

No, I should say I'm sure it hasn't been adequately explored.

This is a cool (representational?) image of colors and their wavelengths:

However.  To me, the three to the right are nearly indistinguishable from each other unless I lean way in and give it a minute.  I can figure out which they are because I know the spectrum, but that seems like cheating.

And I don't know what's up with the periodic explosion.

I should say -- the color trails they leave are much more visually distinct, to me.  But just looking at the trail colors, I wouldn't be able to tell you which is red and which is green, for instance.  They're both the same not-really color to me.

The explosion occurs whenever the colors are synchronized, and is actually changing colors as it explodes, going through the entire spectrum. Or it's intended to show that, at least. I doubt it's actually full-spectrum.

Cigarette sales 1970-2012 by state GIF (http://i.imgur.com/yj5c0sV.gif) (Current year is shown in bottom left corner)

I found this kind of interesting and a little surprising. It doesn't reflect e-cigs or hand-rolled cigs, and some states have low cig tax rates, which lead to misleading high sales in that state when many of the purchasers are from bordering states. There's probably other issues affecting the accuracy, but the overall trend is obvious.

Pretty fascinating.  I know CA taxes the hell out of them and spends a ton on anti-smoking advertisement funded by those taxes.  It appears to have worked.  I remember in 94 smoking was banned in restaurants here and '96 in bars.  The west seems to have followed CA.  The tobacco growing regions seemed to be well behind the curve, and WBGV and Kintuckeh are the only two deep reds left.

I like that. I wanted to see if that was a photo or a painting. I saw it said "found on youtube" below it, so I clicked on that, and it started showing a video about snakes. Then I tried clicking on the photo... same thing. Then I tried allowing JavaScript, and a hover-over thingee appeared, telling me to log-in with FB or email.

I fail at Pinterest.

Pinterest is weird.  What were you actually trying to do, though?  In Opera, I can see the hovertext, save the image to disk, whatnot, but I don't see anything on the page saying if it's a painting or what.

Title: Re: Other Worthy Images

Bear's stuff is always full of fascinating ideas . . . sometimes too many . . . but his plotting always takes a turn near the end that almost makes me wish I hadn't read the book.  I don't think he trusts plot to sell a story.

Hegira, cool until the end where he reveals what's really going on and reality breaks down, rather out of left field.

Blood Music, cool until the end where reality literally breaks down, rather out of left field.

Dinosaur Summer . . . actually, the first half was awesome, and then it got lamer and lamer.  BOO.

With Eon, I just got to the point where I felt like he was pummeling me with concepts instead of writing a story.  I lost track of what was going on, and stopped caring.

Robert Charles Wilson is an even better writer who does the same thing, only moreso.  Premise -- awesome!  Writing -- really good!  Story . . . keeps taking left turns I don't like, and getting more and more depressing for no good reason, and the ending pisses me off.

Then I go read some cheesy space opera because it's more satisfying.  I can't wait until we get out of this sophomoric period where people think significance and maturity in a story come from making it a downer.  I have half a dozen Iain Banks books at home that I'm sure are 90% terrific but I haven't started because I suspect they're going to piss me off . . . .

According to redditors, the original article (http://www.appledaily.com.tw/realtimenews/article/local/20150809/666182) (from Taiwan and from today, apparently) says that the white car was trying to get out of the way of the tornado but was transported 20-30 meters and left on its side.  The man who appears seemingly out of nowhere was on a motorcycle.  Apparently no one was seriously hurt.

This picture of the moon (http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=86353&eocn=home&eoci=iotd_grid) captured between the satellite and Earth showing the dark side is what led me to the article about it.

Quote
A million miles away, DSCOVR orbits a unique location called Lagrange point 1, or L1. This point is a gravity neutral point in space, allowing DSCOVR to essentially hover between the sun and Earth at all times.

Ian's got all moldy after about three days.  Green ooze all over the front porch.  I should have taken a pic.

Nice.

1950s and 1960s Popular Mechanix, et al, are full of home-made 'hunting buggy' variations on this theme, many of them hilariously ugly.

Probably still the greatest of these, from a different design beginning, is the amphibious swamp buggy "The Rhino", with its airtight hemispherical wheels.

Weird. I had never heard of a Scorpion until yesterday, and now you mention it again. We've had some minor flooding down here, and the park manager was telling me about touring the park in some guy's Scorpion, and he showed me pics of it. Based on where he went in that, yeah, it will go pretty much everywhere.

I used one in a post-apocalyptic thing I wrote way the hell back when, so the brand stuck in my mind.
