Well.  Microsoft.

In their defense, Chrome is such crap nowadays that it's kind of a wash.

The other shop . . . had an automatic Windows 10 update that broke their internet completely.  I had to try to diagnose and fix it via text messages to a very non-technical person.

I sent YT down there instead and told him (based on the googles) to erase all of Firefox's history, cookies, and cache.

Turns out that in the current versions of Firefox, that's apparently a big BIG pain in the ass.

 to ALL of them

JFC, Edge.  YOU HAD ONE JOB.
One job, one problem. See how much better it's gotten?

It could be argued that google itself is a virus.

It's symbolic of our struggle against reality.

So MS has a browser called Edge?  I was afraid that U2 was forcing music on us again.

It could be argued that google itself is a virus.

Somebody used the term "Google ecosystem" while we were discussing how to deal with limited Internet bandwidth aboard ship. I thought that was really interesting. It is valuable to think about Google as a whole community of varied pathogens with different modes of infection and different levels of virulence.

You press the shutter button, and the Nokia 9 takes a photo with each lens, the software mashes all five photos together, and outputs a single, better photo.

I think this tech is going to lead to a breakthrough in photography eventually. Photography has been pretty stagnant for a long time really, there have been big changes, but nothing really major like this could be.

The company behind the software in this phone; Light, has a camera with 16 lenses. Their gallery of pictures is not very impressive though, leading me to think it's going to be a while before they really get a handle on it. Capturing massive amounts of data is one thing, but filtering it into the optimum image requires subjective decisions beyond the ability of a chip or AI.

The sad thing is we've become so accustomed to the exaggerated detail, range and depth of CGI that we probably won't be very impressed with the new tech once it's optimized.

This kind of thing has been around for a very long time -- it just hasn't penetrated the mainstream consumer market much.  Or it's only done so in hidden ways.

Security camera tech makes a LOT of use of integral processing like this, though.  For instance, for like twenty years now you could buy a camera that took an anamorphic feed off a hemispherical mirror, so it could see in more or less 360 degrees, and then software restored the image to a circular panorama sort of thing.  Surveillance cameras have done similar crazy things, and the military's had all kinds of composite-camera stuff.

Astronomers have even cooler stuff, but it's mostly for use on slowly moving subjects.  Well, apparently slowly moving.

Similarly, you could buy near-infrared video cameras that automatically color-shift the output, and yadda yadda.  And they have metamaterial-lens cameras now that take hundreds of photos simultaneously at different focal depths / light levels / whatever shit from one aperture, to be composited or for you to select from.

Interestingly, there's also a new camera system that guesses what's just out of view by analyzing shadows and reflections in real time.  It looks pretty cool.

On twitter yesterday someone took a picture from within their car through the windshield.  There was a grasshopper on the windshield and a water tower in the distance.  It looked like a giant grasshopper was about to level the water tower.  I wonder how the multiple lenses and processing would change that image.

Doesn't Apple already sell a phone with adjustable depth of field and focus?  I think you'd be able to have one or the other in focus, or both.

Is there a built-in tilt-shift filter out there?  That'd be cool.  God, the cat photos we could be seeing . . . .

Last month, Google announced that its Nest Secure would be updated to work with Google Assistant software. Following the update, users could simply utter “Hey Google” to access voice controls on the product line-up’s “Nest Guard” device.

The main problem, though, is that Google never told users that its product had an internal microphone to begin with. Nowhere inside the Nest Guard’s hardware specs, or in its marketing materials, could users find evidence of an installed microphone.

When Business Insider broke the news, Google fumbled ownership of the problem: “The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs,” a Google spokesperson said. “That was an error on our part.”

“Oops! We neglected to mention we’re recording everything you do while fronting as a security device,” wrote Scott Galloway, professor of marketing at the New York University Stern School of Business.

It's sad that I find this so comical.

From Google's end, the BEST version of this is that they really didn't know there was a microphone in there because whoever manufactured it for them put it in without being asked to and without saying.

Which is still not good for people who were foolish enough to buy one.
