I love this story, largely because it's such 19th-century science.  Mad science moves forward!  We can't build a good artificial heart, but we can grow a semi-natural one from a dead heart.

Mmm . . . that's good stuff.

For existing technologies, anyway.  And ethanol may be worse than petroleum.  D'oh!  But ethanol started off with a gigantic lobby already in place . . . .

Uh . . . Japan wins the race for the future yet again:  Japanese scientists read subjects' minds to reconstruct images the subjects saw.  Yes, they hooked people up to what I'm guessing was an fMRI to monitor their brain activity and showed them pictures of letters and shapes.  Then a computer program looked at the brain scans and successfully reproduced the same letters and shapes that the people had been shown.

I want to see them do it with brain scans of the subjects just remembering what they saw, but it's still freakin' incredible.

Meanwhile, holy crap, it may be that a single dose of caffeine while you're pregnant can screw your kid's metabolism and heart function for life.  I'm seriously hoping that later studies reverse this finding -- avoiding caffeine for nine months is not easy in our food culture.  WTF, man.  All this time we were worried about the wrong foods.

The mouse-over text is telling: "Unless the CS students finish the robot revolution before you finish the cephalopod one."

I doubt they can do much to bump Google even if they do operate on a much better algorithm, but they have at least one niche that should draw business: completely anonymous search.

Awesome, isn't it? What if people were as willing to spend that kind of money on education, infrastructure, and job creation? Oh wait, those aren't as cool as a farting phone.

We'll tag-team them.

I was thinking that I'm not so surprised, people did in fact buy the Pet Rock at a similar time of recession.

I'm just wondering how many people here are capable of writing that program. I'm guessing a few. The developer gets about $60K of that, and it's such an obvious app for that market. With all the apps that have been written, it's hard to believe it took that long for someone to come up with it. There's probably a few other obvious ones that haven't been realized yet.
