Of all the amazing things Theodore Bikel did, I remember him most as the Captain of the Soviet submarine in The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming" ... !

He's another of those actors that I've obviously seen a million times but never connected the dots.

I saw The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming in the theater when it was first released
It's symbolic of our struggle against reality.

Backboards are now safe again Darryl Dawkins

Backboards are now safe again Darryl Dawkins

I knew that guy! He was running (or was the main attraction of) a basketball camp at Oxy the summer I went to college with the President. He was hilarious. And at the time the *largest* person I had ever seen in my life. I mean yeah, he was tall, and he wasn't fat in any sense. He was just, like, I dunno, someone set the xerocloner for 150% zoom. Anyway, dang, too young. What's up with that. Not just the concussed handegg players who are dying early.

Very large people do tend to have shorter lifespans (Manute also gone).  I like to think I'm in the sweet spot at 6' 260#.  I loved watching Dawkins and Dr. J.  Never a 6er fan, but I loved those two guys.

National Geographic Society.

Their board had zero ideas and gave up.  That's exactly what happened.

I agree with your analysis, but isn't this more of a terrestrial departure?
I'm generalizing from one example here, but everyone generalizes from one example. At least, I do.

Cross-post with the NBA thread, Flip Saunders. OK I did *not* know he went to Minnesota and played with Kevin McHale and Mychal Thompson. Hell, I didn't know Kevin McHale played at Minnesota.

McHale is from the Iron Range. This explains so much.

It just sounds likely.

Honestly, watching McHale score bizarrely in the post was my favorite part of watching the Celtics, way back when.  Weird-ass twisting hop-off-on-foot from-under-the-basket triple-fake lay-ins with three guys trying to block him or strip the ball.  It often looked like he must have at least three arms.

Melissa Mathison, wrote E.T., was for a time married to Harrison Ford. Damn.
