Birds:  They're not like mammals.

Attenborough had an awesome film of a bird sitting in a bush in Africa.  The wind was blowing intermittently, and the bush was swaying all over the place, but the bird kept its head perfectly still while its body was pogoing all over the place.

Bird higher neurological functions are really different from mammalian brain function.  I often figure there must have been a whole range of neurological (and probably metabolic) diversity among dinosaurs, from slow-reptile to fast-reptile to crocodilian to bird.  The fast-reptile dinosaurs must've been impressive, but the bird-brained ones were probably fearsome as hell.  Even for dinosaurs.

I also suspect most dinosaurs had really variable metabolisms, like a crocodile crossed with a goanna, and maybe even moreso.  When there's nothing that needed its attention, the average dinosaur was probably somewhere between cow and statue on the metabolic chart, but when it needed to go, I bet it went.

And like with birds today, guessing how 'smart' they were is a total crapshoot.  Birds tend to have excellent processing power for a few key tasks, and they just don't bother with much else.  They're weird fluffy robots.

You've never met a raven, then. Unless by "robot" you mean something like Ash.

Yes, but Ash was so much better behaved in Fifth Element.

Ravens are totally robots.  Even crows are, although their programming is a trifle wonky.  That experiment with raven problem-solving skills from a couple of years ago is a perfect example.  Young ravens experiment with random actions when trying to solve a puzzle.  Mature ravens just look at the puzzle . . . and think . . . and then try the correct solution on their first attempt.

That is an utterly computer-like approach.  They clearly apply previous experiences to thought-experiments and rotate through until they find a working solution.  The mature ravens didn't mess about at all.  Just look, think, solve.  Only if it's a puzzle they can't solve will the mature ravens start messing with it, trying to see if there's something they haven't learned yet that will help.

Chimps don't do that.  Children don't do that.  Dolphins don't do that.  Even adult humans virtually never do that unless they're given a specific reason to.

I'm not putting them down by calling them robots.  It's only the proliferation of ugly humanocentric fetishes that makes me dread the day that sexy robots for dating become prevalent.

I need this done ASAP, or whenever you can get around to it.  Tomorrow is fine.

Corvids!  :detta:

I saw a great documentary -- it might have been a Nature episode -- about ornithologists in Seattle studying crows. It's pretty amazing what crows, ravens, jays, etc seem to know and/or can learn.

Have we already done this one?

Big cats vs laser pointers

I have to say . . . those zoologists are pretty lame laser pointer wigglers, though.

  Yeah.  Babies often have a similar effect.

It's no wonder that cats usually think we're idiots.

I am SO TEMPTED to take my laser pointer to the zoo.  But I imagine they frown on that, and with good reason.

Please forgive me if I'm the last one to see the insane Russian animated House music video.

It's possible there's NSFW stuff going on at some point.  There's a lot going on, and it's hard to take it all in.
