I'm revisiting this little bit of comedy gold....

...and the Christmas version, which is, for me at least, the superior effort.

Guessing that you might have been under a rock for the duration of the, oh, 1980's I will tell you. They are a little band out of Athens, GA called R.E.M.

The album that this (the original called Shiny Happy People) is off of has some lovely mandolin work on it (lovely to someone who knows absolutely nothing about that type of stuff except I think it sounds nice.) I don't think that anyone else was heavily featuring a mandolin in the late 80's early 90's.

If you want to hear the mandolin (in a really crappy format) try here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7vs21ZKrKM.

It is a wonderful video, groundbreaking for it's time. And to understand the song itself you need to understand that the phrase "Losing my Religion" is a very regional Southern colloquialism when describing swearing.

To whit: "Well Thelma put some kind of jalapeņo in her pimento cheese and that kind of heresy makes me want to lose my religion"
Translation: I cannot believe that jumped up, blue haired old Yankee transplant had the F**king nerve to try and pass off that crappy assed velveeta abomination as pimento cheese."

Yeah...probably...  I backed off listening to top 40 stuff in  the "70'S".  I had an 8-track tape player in my "68" Chevy truck.  My high school friend and I used to barrel down the road listening to this.

this one too .
I loved those mandos in the old rock and roll stuff....

And I know this is going to be mucho obscure, but I think Peter Buck stole the idear to use mandolin from Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, because coincidentally on the song where he uses mandolins ("I Will Dare") is a song that features Peter Buck doing the guitar solo. A good five years before "Losing my Religion."

No, there isn't a video I can show you for demonstration. The funny thing about Replacements videos in the 1980s was that they eschewed the style and the two music videos of theirs I can think of are in black and white and feature just stereo speakers. With fancy camera angles...

Peter Buck also produced the Concrete Blonde album "Bloodletting" the same year as the REM album and one song "Darkening of the Light" has some nice mandolin on it...

Why would you use the word "stole" and all of the baggage it carries when you could just as easily use the phrase "was inspired by"

Accusations of intellectual theft are pretty hard core.
