World's Most Useless Machine Ever

  I've seen that before, though.  Someone sells that, but with a rubber hand that comes out (not quite as promptly) to hit the switch.

That self-reassembling chair 'robot' is stranger and possibly more useless, but it's not as amusing.

It's this:

edit:  Crap!  That link doesn't work in the US anymore.

I know exactly the video you mean, though, Cookieface.  I might be able to find it elsewhere.  It's definitely pretty recent.

It works here in Canuckistan.

It was probably Max Fleischer, right?

Nope.  The cartoon was created within the past few years.  It was just made to look like that old vintage style.  The song itself is an oldie though.

:brainwaves:

I'll keep looking too, and I'll post it if I find it.

The reason I was reminded of it is because I couldn't sleep a couple of nights ago, so I watched Baz Luhrmann's Australia around 5am thinking that would help me doze off.  There's a scene about half an hour into it where Hugh Jackman is driving Nicole Kidman's character to her ranch for the first time.  They're arguing with each other and really faintly in the background, I think that song was playing.  I think the year that particular scene was taking place was 1939.

Maybe I can find that scene on Youtube and see if that'll help.

P.S.  Can you get any info off that link in Canada, Pizza?

It's the "Real Tuesday Weld - Bathtime in Clerkenwell" according to youtube. It's a long looped sample of the Mills Brothers from 1931 with b&w animation of blackbirds trashing London.

Does this link work?

Nope, but this one does.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2S-UGulpCo

Oh THANK YOU PIZZA!  The Mills Brothers were involved somehow then.  Now I can fucking get some sleep!

eta:  Why did I think plates were being thrown?  Huh.  At least a bathtub was involved.  Now I'm going to go back to my Mills Brothers CDs and see which song is being sampled.

Awesome!  Yeah, I recognized that Tuesday Weld bit as soon as the Hutt posted it.  I sent tangerine a copy of that video back in March, but it was too long ago for me to remember the bits.

[off to watch it again]

[stupid Universal and their copyright BS]

[didn't they lose that lawsuit?]

We only got a half hour into that movie and shut it off. Between the horrendous acting and that racist imitation of an aboriginal accent by the narrator. And the incomprehensible plot. Just utter crap. haha

But I'm glad you at least got to hear your song.

After watching it again, I guess it's done more in sharply contrasted Felix The Cat style rather than Steamboat Willie.

I can't thank you enough, man.  And yeah, Australia wasn't good.  The cinematography was really pretty though.

  I emailed tangerine, and she found another link to the same video in about two seconds.

My googling is not as good as I thought.

 I don't know, but I've never seen the animation you were talking about, and I thought I knew the cartoon, so most likely it's two different cartoons mixed in your head. The one I was thinking about was like a Heckle and Jeckle, but older, B&W... maybe it was an old Popeye

I called my mom around 7:30 and asked her if she had the Mills Brothers' Sweeter Than Sugar, which is where that sample comes from.  Odds are in my favor.  She was already in bed and didn't want to go downstairs to look.  I told her I'd check in a few days when I'd visit and then I'd take her out to lunch.  She sounded excited as long as there will be onion rings involved.

Fleischer did do a cartoon centered around the Mills Bros., but dammit, there are no crows throwing plates!

Sweeter Than Sugar is not on archive.org, but I had fun listening to some of their other tunes. My dad probably had it on CD or album or maybe even 78. If you can't find it, let me know - I might be able to get it for you. It's listed on some torrents too, but I don't know if they're legit.
